Young footballer Renyue Reeya Lepcha passes away after a hard battle against brain tumour

Gangtok, January 9: Renyue Reeya Lepcha, a 16-year-old star footballer, who represented Sikkim in National level football tournament has passed away on Friday evening after fighting a long battle with a brain tumour. She hailed from Sangkhu Radukhandu GPU, Maneybong Dentam constituency in West Sikkim and was a member of the Women’s Football Academy Dentam, well known for her talent in football all over the Northeast states as well as the nation. She was diagnosed with a brain tumour and the first surgery was conducted on October 28, 2020, at Apollo hospital, Delhi. 

As the medical expenses were too high, several campaigns were launched to help her by the Football Players Association of Sikkim (FPAS), college students, journalists and football clubs from Kalimpong and Darjeeling. Journalist Dichen Ongmu Bhutia, from Sikkim Express, had also organized a run for Reeya. The people of the state shall always remember her as a fighter who never gave up in the football field as well as in life.
