SIKKIM HIGH COURT DIRECTS THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO SET UP DEDICATED COVID-19 WARDS WITH ICU, OXYGEN & VENTILATOR FACILITIES WITH RT-PCR FACILITIES IN THE DISTRICT HOSPITALS OF SIKKIM.

SIKKIM HIGH COURT DIRECTS THE STATE GOVERNMENT TO SET UP DEDICATED COVID-19 WARDS WITH ICU, OXYGEN & VENTILATOR FACILITIES WITH RT-PCR FACILITIES IN THE DISTRICT HOSPITALS OF SIKKIM.
With an aim to improve the medical facilities in the district level the State High court On 15.05.2021, heard the PIL regarding COVID-19 management in the state of Sikkim regarding treatment of patients suffering from Covid-19 virus in the District Hospitals at Mangan, Namchi, Gyalshing and Singtam for providing Covid-19 dedicated ICU and ventilator facilities at those hospitals and the need to involve the concerned District Magistrates, Medical Superintendents/Officers of the Districts to augment the resources to deal with the present pandemic.
The division Bench of the High Court led by Chief Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, and Justice Bhaskar Raj Pradhan urged the State Government to take urgent and immediate steps to provide RT-PCR testing facilities in the four District Hospitals and employ trained manpower and Microbiologists for the aforesaid purpose.
The court further asked the state government regarding the availability of ICU, oxygen and ventilator support facilities for COVID-19 patients in district hospitals, including Singtam.
To this the state submitted it before the court that apart from the ICU facilities in Gangtok, five non-Covid ICUs in the District Hospital Namchi, seven non-Covid ICUs at Gyalshing, two non–COVID-19 ICUs at Mangan and five non-Covid ICUs in Singtam, can be used as COVID-19 facilities in case if any emergency need arises.
On this the High court further urged the state that dedicated Covid-19 wards and ICU facilities should be provided in all the District Hospitals, including Singtam, with oxygen and ventilator support.
It was also informed to the court by the state that apart from the proposal for obtaining 56 nos. of D-Type Oxygen Cylinders and 179 numbers of B-Type Oxygen Cylinders there is also a proposal for setting up of PSA (Pressure Swing Absorption) Oxygen Generating Plant with capacity of 200 LMP at District Hospital, West Sikkim.
