Sikkim Alpine University, Kamrang, Namchi, organized their first ever fresher’s welcome at the campus on 17 March, 2022. The University adopted a ‘think green, act green’ theme and decided to go eco-friendly and practice sustainable development. The importance of zero-waste and sustainability was stressed upon. As a gesture to mark the beginning of this journey, the event used a cloth banner instead of the regular flex. The program began with the welcome address proposed by the Registrar, Dr. H K Rajput. He welcomed all the students and the Chief Guests G P Sharma, Joint Director, District Education Department, L B Rai, Deputy Director, District Education Department and Smita Rai, women entrepreneur and social worker.
The program was presided over by the Chancellor of the university Dr. Ashwani Jindal and the Director of the university Dr. Neelam Jindal and Avinash Kansal. The Registrar stressed once again about the importance of following the sustainibilty goals and how the campus is adopting a zero-wastage policy. He also spoke about the social responsibility the University has undertaken in making the campus an open and friendly space for the differently-abled and the future plans to adopt the nearby schools in Kamrang.
The welcome address was followed by various cultural programs hosted by the faculty members of the University for the students. The students of the University performed traditional dance forms. This was followed by various performances by the students.
The Chief Guest of the event G P Sharma congratulated the University for all their efforts and their responsibility towards the society. He also spoke about the importance of enlightenment in the shaping of the society and the role played by a University in the same. He spoke about the significance of research and quality education and the need to work together to make India better.
Smita Rai shared her experiences as a women entrepreneur and spoke about her journey as a social worker. She inspired the students and pushed them to remain consistent and passionate in pursuing their dreams. She also spoke about the need to shop local and encourage handicrafts.
The University organized various games and activities for the students of the University. The event also had a prize distribution ceremony of the activities conducted on Constitution Day. Tseten Gyaltsen Bhutia from the Department of Chemistry and Kamala Rai from the Department of Zoology won the Mr and Ms Fresher title respectively. The program concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Shubankar Gurung, Assistant Professor, Department of Botany. The program was organized by the faculty members of Sikkim Alpine University and co-ordinated by Dr. Sareena Subba.
