PUBG might “Fall Back to Safe Zone” as India pulls back ties with Tencent Games
One of the most played mobile games in India, PUBG Mobile/PUBGM and its lighter version for devices with lesser processing abilities, PUBGM-Lite, was banned in India last week, along with 117 other Chinese apps. In that light, South Korea’s original internal gaming brand that owns and develops the game, PUBG Corporation, which operates under Bluehole, is looking to cut ties with the Chinese company Tencent Game that had been authorized with the franchisee of PUBGM and PUBGM-Lite in India, which is one of PUBGM’s largest user bases in the world.
The decision of banning the hugely popular battle royal game in India upset the gaming community of the country and begat a seemingly vocal outcry against the decision. This decision and the outcry added with the reported losses which accounted to almost $34 Billion in terms of market value, which Tencent had endured just a day after the order of ban on Chinese app, has led to PUBG Corporation to come out with a statement (1) that resonates with an affirmation to the Indian Government’s decision of ban in terms with data privacy and security. The statement by PUBG Corporation says that the company will no longer authorize the franchise to Tencent Games in India and will take on all the publishing and franchising responsibility in India.
Since PUBGM is the intellectual property owned by PUBG Corporation, it is their decision to cut off ties with Tencent and then move its publishing to India which can help the game comply with Indian Government’s security policies. This decision has led to believe that it can help the game make a comeback in India, and satiate many gamers, among whom professional streamers and competitive gamers reside and whose livelihoods depend on them playing the game.
