Gangtok, August 7 (IPR): The Sikkim Athletic Association (SAA), in collaboration with the Athletics Federation of India(AFI) celebrated National Javelin Day today at Khel Gaon Stadium in Resithang, Gangtok.
The event had Mr Wasif Ali, Manager (Corporate Affairs and CSR), Sun Pharma as the chief guest. The programme was also attended by Mr Bikash Thapa, Chairman, Stars of Hope, executives and members of the Sikkim Athletics Association and District Associations, as well as former athletes and students from different schools in Gangtok District.
The SAA offered a token of appreciation to Mr Wasif Ali and Mr Bikash Thapa for their continued support in the field of athletics in Sikkim.
Mr Rajiv Roka, General Secretary of SAA in his address introduced the event as a celebration of the remarkable achievement of Mr Neeraj Chopra during the Tokyo Olympics where he secured the Gold medal for India. Mr Rajiv Roka emphasized that the event aims to inspire the country’s youth and intends to nurture and develop more athletes like Mr Neeraj Chopra, with the ultimate goal of bringing greater glory to India in the world of sports.
The programme was held as an Inter-District competition with participants from all the districts of Sikkim. The competition was held for the following age groups:
- Under 14 Boys & Girls
- Under 18 Boys & Girls
- Open Men & Women
- Veterans (45 yrs and above) Men & Women
The event was filled with excitement as athletes from all over the region showcased their javelin-throwing skills, bringing a sense of pride and community to the sport.

The Competition was followed by a plantation drive by the members and athletes of the Sikkim Athletic Association.
It may be noted here that the National Javelin Day is an annual event of the Athletics Federation of India to commemorate the first Olympic Gold Medal of India in the field of Athletics that was won by Mr Neeraj Chopra during the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
