Gangtok, April 24:

The National Panchayati Raj Day, which is celebrated on April 24 every year signifies the decentralization of power to the grassroots by the institutionalization of the Panchayati raj through the constitution (73rd Amendment act) 1992, which came into force on April 24th, 1993. The Panchayati Raj Institutions acquired the status and dignity of all the responsive people's bodies with sufficient representation, devolution of powers, and financial resources. 

The Chief Minister, Prem Singh Tamang on this occasion expressed his greetings and a toast to the members of Panchayati Raj Institution across the state on this occasion of National Panchayati Raj Day, through a press release from his official social media page.

Tamang on the occasion remarked on the importance of this date which defined a moment in the history of decentralization of political power to the grassroots level. The State government has taken an innovative decision to hold the panchayat elections on a non-partisan basis by amending the Sikkim Panchayat Act to usher in true democracy in grassroots governance. 

Tamang through the press release has stated, “The awards recognize the achievements of panchayats and further to empower and motivate them”. 

Tamang in his release also congratulated the recipients of the various awards which were presented by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj during the occasion. The awards recognize the achievements of the Panchayats while also motivating them to empower and motivate them further, says the press release. Along with Tamang, Sonam Lama, Minister for RDD also congratulated the recipients of the various awards

The recipients of the various awards presented by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj are as follows:

  • Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Sashaktikaran Puraskar: East District Panchayat
  • Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Shashastikaran Puraskar: Lunchok Kameray Gram Panchayat, South Sikkim
  • Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Panchayat Shashastikaran Puraskar: Budang Kameray Gram Panchayat, East Sikkim
  • Gram Panchayat Vikas Yojana Puraskar: Tingbhong Gram Panchayat, North Sikkim
  • Nanaji Deshmukh Rashtriya Gaurav Gram Sabha Puraskar: Singhik Gram Panchayat, North Sikkim
  • Bal Hitaishi Gram Panchayat: Rhenock Gram Panchayat, East Sikkim

According to the Press release from the Directorate of Panchayati Raj, RDD the National Panchayati Raj Day was celebrated through virtual mode duly addressed by the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj. whereas, the virtual meeting at the State level was attended by Samsher Bokhim,  Zilla Adhakshya, East, C.S.Rao, Pr. Secretary, RDD, Karma Bhutia, Sabhapati, Budang Kamarey Gram Panchayat, East, Prabhakar Rai, Director Panchayat from NIC, Gangtok, with the participation of awardee Panchayats and officials of South and North Districts from their respective district headquarters.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi in his address also mentioned the Survey of Villages and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) project which was launched for providing property cards, and also released the property cards to those states covered in the first phase, while directing all states to follow up for early execution of the project meant for the welfare of the people.
