All you need to know about the Online vaccination portal

The Government of India, in order to ramp up the vaccination drive in the country launched the COVID-19 vaccination registration portal through the website www.cowin.gov.in. The main objective of the portal is to allow the citizens to register themselves and schedule the date & time to receive the vaccine.

For the age bracket 45+ and above, the portal allowed online registration as well as walk in registration at the vaccination centre. Subsequently, it allowed the people to register & book the vaccine slots online but also allowed people to walk into the vaccination centre and register themselves on the spot.

However, for the age bracket 18-45, the Government of India has revamped the portal in such a way that it is mandatory for the citizens falling on the above bracket to schedule the appointment within the available slots and the predesignated vaccination centre. The option of walk-in vaccination has been disabled for the age group 18-45 in order to avoid crowding at the vaccination centre. The fixed number of slots per day has been done considering the capacity of the vaccination centre including the manpower availability in order to avoid unnecessary crowding at the centres.

The portal is a centralized portal developed and maintained completely by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of India and is implemented in the state through the office of the United Nations Development Programme office which is also under the monitoring of the Government of India. The content updation along with data updation in the portal is done by the Government of India as per the inputs submitted by the State Governments. The State Government has been given very limited role in the updation of the Web application. The scheduling of the vaccine slots as per the available vaccination centre is done by the state unit of UNDP as per the inputs from the State Health Department.

The citizens can also register and book the vaccination slots through the Arogya Setu Application, which is again developed and implemented by the Government of India. The app is updated by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as per the inputs submitted by the State Government.

In the state of Sikkim the vaccination drive for the age group 18-45 started from 16th May 2021 with a slot of 300 per day. Initially only one centre was identified for the vaccination on the first day, however the centres are being added as and when the vaccination drive progresses. The slots have been fixed as per the guidelines of the Government of India.
