“Atleast give us right to education we deserve” says Roshan Rai School Mangement Committee Member of Rolep senior secondary school over shortage of teacher in the school
A senior secondary school which covers 2 GPUs with almost 200 admissions annually has only 19 teachers in the schools in which one regular teacher has been transferred to another school leaving the school with just one regular teacher.
As per the SMC members, the non teaching staffs are taking classes and in the other hand dropouts are also in rise due to shortage of teachers in the school, “There is a huge shortage of teachers in our school and due to which students drop out of school and indulge in other bad activities” said Roshan Rai
“Education is our basic right, atleast give us that we are not asking more. With education one can become successful in life and can do something better for themselves but if these basic rights are not provided then how can one be what they aspire to be?” questioned Rai
Furthermore, Rai stated that this is not only fight of Rolep SMC but of all, ” I appeal everyone to come and speak out for these kind of injustice because this is not only fight of me alone it’s of all and it’s for betterment of our children and society”
At last he appealed the state government and education department to look into the matter and provide sufficient teachers in the school.
Earlier in the month of November 2021 the students, SMC members along with the principal of the Rolep Senior Secondary School had raised their voices regarding the same shortage of teachers Issue.
Speaking with Sikkim Chronicle on November 2021, One student of Class 12 said, ” We don’t have sufficient teachers in our school, for class 11 and 12 we don’t have PGTs and due to which classes are being taken by non teaching staffs aswell.”
“I am student of final 12 and will probably pass this school within coming months or so but i appeal the authorities to refrain from creating this kind of situation in our schools especially to upcoming ones. We have school but we don’t have enough teachers, so without them this school is of no use ” added his statement
On the same concern on November 2021 , Lok Nath Sharma, Principal Rolep Senior Secondary School said, ” This school was declared as senior secondary since 2017 and this school really has storage of teachers. At current we have 18 staffs in total amongst which 6 are regular and rest are in Adhoc basis”
“Somehow I have been managing the classes, our school night guard teaches mathmatics for class 6 and 7, my office assistant is class teacher of class 8.”
In addition, Sharma also stressed on the repairing of the newly constructed school building damaged by earthquake, “we have a new school building which was build under the department of Social justice and welfare however the newly constructed building has developed cracks due to earthquake and i have already intemated the department as well as the BDO”
However due to no prompt action the SMC members yet again rasied their voices against the shortage of teachers.
A state with 81.1 % literacy rate has been struggling with a prompt education sector in Sikkim. In the past 2 years education system of Sikkim has been questioned and opposed by sections of society. Be it regarding the Protest by Students of Sikkim government college Gyalsing over completion of college infrastructure in time, Protest of Adhoc Teachers regarding the regulation, Transpirancy in merit list of b.ed addmission in Soreng B.ed college
The question on transparent working of the education has been challenged by sections of society since past few years. Which raises the question towards the functioning of education department and education system of Sikkim?
Responding over the issue, Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang commented on a news post on a digital platform. CM Tamang thanked Roshan Rai for bringing issue to the light and assured to visit the school. He wrote ‘Roshan Bhai thanks for information. I visit the school’.
