On February 16, 2021, Tuesday a dog was allegedly tied to a bike and was dragged over one kilometre in Surat, Gujurat. The incident came to light when a video of the helpless dog being dragged surfaced on social media.

In the video, Patel was seen wearing his uniform and holding one end of the rope while the other end of the rope was tied to the canine’s neck. Patel’s unidentified friend was riding the two-wheeler.

A woman named Saloni Patra approached the Khotadara police after she saw the video on a messaging app. The accused was identified as Hitesh Patel, a sanitation worker in Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). The cops identified Patel using the registration number of the bike and also seized the vehicle.

Patel alleged that the dog was dead and they were taking the dead body for disposal. However, an animal activist, Darshan Desai claimed that the dog was alive and moving. Desai who also happens to be a volunteer of Prayas Team Environment said that the movement of dog’s legs and resistance is clearly visible in the video.

Patel was arrested and booked under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Acts and various sections of the Indian Penal code including section 429. The police are making attempts to trace the other person in the video.
