Surprise Covid test conducted at Lall Bazzar: More than 40 flee

In the morning of May 27, 2021, the Gangtok Municipal Corporation along with the Department of Health and welfare department conducted Rapid Antigen Covid test at the Kanchanzonga Shopping Plaza also known as Lall Bazaar for all the vendors. The plaza is one of the most visited places by all the Gangtokians and people from around to buy daily basic essentials such as vegetables and other products and is one of the most visited places during this lockdown, hence it was necessary to conduct the test at the centre

Surprise Covid test conducted at Lall Bazzar: More than 40  flee

Sikkim is under lockdown due to the increase in positivity rate of covid cases, according to the latest data by the government the positivity rate of the case has crossed 20% in the state, with more than 150 positive case being reported daily.

The state government to slow down the positivity rate is conducting Tests at various hotspots all over Sikkim and regard to which, On the morning of May 27, 2021, the Gangtok Municipal Corporation along with the Department of Health and welfare department conducted Rapid Antigen Covid test at the Kanchanzonga Shopping Plaza also known as Lall Bazaar for all the vendors.

The plaza is one of the most visited places by all the Gangtokians and people from around to buy daily basic essentials such as vegetables and other products and is one of the most visited places during this lockdown, hence it was necessary to conduct the test at the centre

Dr Sonam Ethenpa, Director to Health Department said “ it was very essential to conduct a test here at  Lal bazaar since it is one of the most visited places at this time, if one comes for shopping here then he is directly in contact with another, and some people here can be a carrier or hidden positive so it was very necessary for everyone to take the test for their safety as well as for their loved ones”

“ The test was kept surprised with a reason, as when we went for testing at Artitang with prior information to the people, 20 people had filled the testing form but during testing only 7 turned out so to avoid such kind of situations surprise test was conducted without prior notice” he added

The surprise RAT test was done with no prior notice to the Shop vendors, the officials from the health department arrived at around 11 Am, in presence of GMC Mayor Nell Bahadur Chettri

Wherein all the vendors were locked inside the building, following a panic situation was also created at first among the vendors, in order to flee the testing about 40  vendors managed to flee the site through the backdoor.

One of the vendors who were hesitant to take the test at first said, “if we would have given prior notice about the testing we would have not stocked the vegetables”

Mayor GMC Nell Bhadhur Chettri  speaking on the surprise testing drive said “ it is  an initiative which had to be done sooner or later, as it is for the safety of every individual who comes to the complex to shop or sell glossary”

Mayor Chettri stressing on the vendors who managed to flee stated “ it will be mandatory for all the vendors to have a covid negative certificate to open their shop, and those who fleed have to take the test then only they will be allowed to open their shop”

“ The testing will go on until all the vendors are tested, and those who will be found positive will be given treatment by the government and also will be admitted to Covid Care centre if one has no proper facility of home isolation” he added

A total of 200 samples was tested on May 27, 2021, out of which 2 positive cases were reported, further, the positive turned individuals are sent into home isolation wherein after that the ASHA workers will visit them daily and also medicines will be provided by the state health department.
