Case registered against group involved in Namchi effigy case


Namchi, 10th June(IPR): DC(South) Mr. M.Bharani Kumar convened a press briefing at District Administrative Centre regarding the incident of protest that occurred on 9th June in Central Park Namchi. He was joined by SSP(South)Mr. Thakur Thapa alongside SDPO (Namchi) Mr. Kessang D Bhutia. 

DC(South) informed that a group of about 15 people were involved in the protest in which an effigy was burnt and the protesters engaged in sloganeering at around 1:40pm yesterday at Central Park Namchi near Axis Bank. He added that the protest carried out was a violation of lockdown imposed by the Government to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state. Further, he said that after receiving the report of the incident which are violations under Indian Penal Code section 188 and the provisions of Disaster Management Act, 2005 a complaint was lodged and a case has been registered at Namchi Police Station against those involved in the protest and to investigate the incident which is a violation of lockdown measures. 

The SSP(South) stated that the Police department has already initiated action on the incident and had filed an entry in the General Diary(GD). He also reiterated that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the law and appropriate action as per law shall  be taken against the persons involved in the incident. In addition, the department has deployed more police personnels in order to ensure strict enforcement of lockdown in the district especially in the Bazaar areas.
