9th foundation day of SKM was celebrated across the state
Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) Party observed its 9th foundation day on February 4 Thursday across the state with much pomp and grandeur.
SKM party was established at Soreng, west Sikkim on 4th February, 2013. Bharati Sharma was the elected the working president of the party who is the first female leader of the political party in Sikkim. In September 2013 P.S. Tamang formally seceded from SDF and became the party president of SKM. On April 12, 2014 SKM contested assembly election from all 32 constituencies. Back then, SKM won 10 seats and became the second largest party and active opposition in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly. Again, in the 2019 election, they contested on all 32 constituencies of the SLA and won 17 constituencies, thus ending Pawan Kumar Chamling’s 25-year rule in Sikkim.
On Thursday, Chief Minister P.S Tamang attended the 9th foundation day celebration at his home constituency Poklok Kamrang, Namchi. The celebration was held at Assangthang helipad near Namchi. In his speech, the Chief Minister congratulated and thanked the party workers of all the constituencies where the SKM foundation day celebrations were being held. He recalled the struggles and hardships faced by the SKM during early years, accusing the then SDF government of launching conspiracies against him and his party.
Tamang asked the party works to renew their membership and take active membership for organizational strengthening of the SKM party. He appealed the SKM workers to follow the ideologies and guidelines of the party and work for all well-being of the Sikkimese people and overall development of Sikkim.

In the Yuksam-Tashiding constituency, Geyzing, the 9th SKM foundation day was celebrated at Chongrang near Tashiding which was graced by the area MLA and deputy speaker Sangay Lepcha.
The MLA while addressing the gathering he called for unity among the people for the development of Yuksam-Tashiding constituency. He informed the mass about the steps taken by the SKM government for road connectivity and other infrastructural issues in the constituency. He mentioned that the Yuksam-Tashiding constituency was left underdeveloped for 25 years by the previous government. Lepcha also spoke about the developmental and welfare schemes initiated by the SKM government and how the welfare benefits would be distributed every year. He also called out SDF government for distributing the schemes and benefits only when the election was close at hand.
On the occasion, dedicated SKM workers of Yuksam-Tashiding were felicitated for their selfless service to the party. A large number people from SDF joined SKM during the programme.
In Gangtok, the Urban Development minister Arun Upreti, who also happens to be the area MLA, reiterated that the SKM government is committed to fulfill the promises and demands placed by the people of the constituency. He was addressing the constituency level 9th SKM foundation day celebration in Arithang. In his address, the area MLA told that the local residents had sought regular power and drinking water supply, quality road and other civic amenities for Arithang constituency during the 2019 elections. He said that the work on Arithang road has started and inspection regarding drinking water and power supply is complete. He mentioned that they have prepared a project which will be submitted to the government very soon. Upreti also asked the gathering to keep faith in the government and stated that all the assurances given for the development of Arithang during the election will be fulfilled.
He also requested the residents to provide land where the state government can construct a community centre along with parking facilities. He said that the government is ready to pay the land compensation and develop the entire building with its own funding. “A multipurpose community centre is must in this era of urbanization” he emphasized.
The 9th SKM foundation day was observed prodigiously at every constituency across the state by the local SKM party.
