Economically Weaker sections now entitled to 10
Gangtok, June 15: In a meeting held today, the Cabinet passed 10% central reservation for the economically weaker section of people who do not fall in the reserved category of ST, SC and OBC in the Centre. Secretary to HCM, S.D. Dhakal in a press conference at Tashiling Secretariat this evening said that this was a historical decision.
He said that this was a long pending aspiration of a certain section of the Sikkimese population who had been deprived of all the privileges especially about availing employment and educational opportunities outside the State, including the All India Services. The Secretary said that this issue was given the highest priority by the present Government and was vigorously pursued and was placed in the Assembly Session, and after a thorough examination, it was finally passed in today’s Cabinet Meeting. The notification for the same will be officially passed within a week, informed Dhakal.
Persons whose family-annual income is less than Rupees 8 lakhs, or possess less than 5 acres of land or less than 1000 sq. ft. residential flat in any municipal area, or less than 100 sq. yard of residential plot in a municipal area, or less than 200 sq. yard of residential plot outside municipal area along the roadside or in commercial areas will be entitled to the reservations. These are the persons who fall within the stipulated category and the bracket of ‘economically weaker section’ and are the ones who will benefit from the same.
The Secretary further informed that the District Collectorate and all the Sub-Divisional Magistrates would issue the Certificates after thorough verification. He explained that the Certificates can also be availed through the online mode and should be renewed every year. The Secretary informed that the reservation will not apply to Technical and Scientific posts and other such posts which are outside the purview of the Central Services. Furthermore, he informed that this would not cause any changes to the already established reservations for other sections.
Another major decision taken in today’s Cabinet Meeting, as informed by the Secretary was the removal of the system of conducting viva-voce for all State Government posts for C and D Category. He shared that once this is notified, there will be no viva-voce for group C and D posts in the State Government, and all Public Sector Undertakings and Organizations/Institutions under the State Government.
