International Women’s Day was celebrated commemorating sportswomen of the State by Department of Sports and Youth Affairs and Khelo India Khelo on the theme “Dus ka Dum” to support women’s sports.
The Women’s Day celebration that commenced on Friday till March 25 at Paljor Stadium will see the participation of athletes in ten sporting disciplines from all over the state with the objective of motivating young girls to pursue their career in sports.
Culture Department Advisor Bhim Kumari Sharma, attended the inaugural day of the 15-day sporting event.
Bhim Kumari Sharma gave a brief overview of International Women’s Day and its significance during her speech at the Women’s Day event. She informed, “The progress made by Indian women in spite of historical gender discrimination. The value of women participating in athletic, doing so provides them with the confidence they need and instills in them the necessity of teamwork”.
Further, the advisor urged girls to take part in sports and provided examples of Sikkimese women who had achieved success in a variety of sectors, including academics, sports, music, and arts. She appealed to show support for the State’s female athletes by going to their sporting events in the same way that they show their support for male players. She expressed her optimism for further growth in Sikkim’s support for women’s sport in her closing remarks.
