Situation update on some countries; 11 districts across 4 states in India reason for concern says MoHFA

 With the nation in its second phase of the lockdown from April 14, the list of countries that have implemented lockdown is also growing as swiftly as COVID-19. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that Europe apart from China is the epicentre of the ongoing worldwide pandemic.

France continues to be the most badly hit by the coronavirus in Europe. Spain and Italy have both have managed to reduce the number of new cases and deaths. The United Kingdom was one of the last countries to impose a lockdown and hence have seen a rising number of new cases daily than Italy. The following are some of the countries that have implemented lockdowns:

Spain continues to be one of the most affected countries worldwide and has reported 18,056 deaths and 172,541 confirmed cases. Despite the grim situation, the country has started beginning to ease lockdown restrictions to try and boost its economy. People in the manufacturing and construction sectors are have been allowed to return to work, while the government has urged everyone else to stay at home.

In the USA, coronavirus deaths have reached an all-time high with 40,000 deaths with nearly half of it being recorded in New York City. This has caused some pressure on President Donald Trump while he claims parts o the country has returned to normalcy. 

France went into lockdown on March 17, almost a week earlier than India, and will continue to remain in lockdown until May 11. France is the third most affected nation in Europe with 152,894 confirmed cases and 19,718 deaths. France similar to India shut down all educational institutions and public places like restaurants, cafes and most shops along with public transportation. Those found violating the lockdown rules could face fines between €135 to €3,700 as well as up to six months in prison for numerous violations.

From April 8 Wuhan, China the origin of the coronavirus have come out from their lockdown, flights and public transportation have also started functioning in China. China’s health authority on Monday informed of 12 new confirmed coronavirus cases on April 19, with no new deaths. China’s currently poll as if April 19 is at 82,747 cases and 4,632 deaths. As countries which were the heart of the crisis now pass their danger peak, new countries have now become a reason for concern like Turkey, which on Sunday exceed China with more than 86,000 cases and 2,017 deaths.

 Italy issued a nationwide lockdown on March 9, ordering more than it’s 60 million residents to stay at home, intra-State travel was banned like India.  Currently, the top 10 most badly affected countries are:

  2. SPAIN: 200,210 cases and 20,852 deaths.
  3. ITALY: 178,972 cases and 23,660 deaths.
  4. FRANCE: 152,894 cases and 19,718 deaths.
  5. GERMANY: 145,743 cases and 4,642 deaths. 
  6. UNITED KINGDOM: 120,067 cases and 16,060 deaths.
  7. TURKEY: 83,306 cases and 2,017 deaths.
  8. IRAN: 83,505 cases and 5209 deaths.
  9. CHINA: 82,747 cases and 4,632 deaths.
  10. RUSSIA: 47,121 cases and 405 deaths.

Globally, the number of confirmed cases has surpassed 2,151,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. More than 143,000 people have died, and some 540,000 have recovered.

India falls on the 17th affected country in the above-stated list with 17,615 cases and 559 deaths. Ministry of Health and Family Affairs’ (MoHFA) Joint Secretary Lav Agarwal on Monday stated that the doubling rate of COVID-19 cases in India has improved to 7.5 days and earlier the doubling rate was 3.4 days. The central government has said that the condition of COVID-19 spread is getting serious in 11 districts across 4 states:

 Rajasthan: Jaipur.

 Madhya Pradesh: Indore

 Maharashtra: Mumbai and Pune.

 West Bengal: Kolkata, Howrah, 24 Parganas, Medinipur East, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.

Six inter-Ministerial Central teams will now assess the situation in these areas led by Additional Secretary Frank officers announced MoHFA on April 20. As of April 20, India readied itself for selective relaxation in non-containment areas. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state with 4,203 cases and 233 deaths. As of yet, Sikkim continues to be the only remaining state with no confirmed coronavirus cases.
