India’s current COVID-19 recovery rate considered ‘satisfactory’

Day 64 while in the fourth phase of national lockdown, India ranks tenth in the list of countries most affected by the novel coronavirus with 146,371 confirmed cases and 4,187 deaths leaving the previously leading countries like China and Iran behind. The United States of America has by far the most cases of the coronavirus with 1,706,226 cases and 99 805 deaths. Still, all is not completely bleak. There are 61,151 cases of recovery, who have been discharged from hospitals, bringing India’s active cases in India to 81,033.

The Ministry of Health Affairs, after a gap of more than a week, on May 20 held a press briefing where Lav Agrawal, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, said that the recovery rate of the coronavirus in India is 39.62 per cent, which is better than when the first lockdown phase started and the recovery rate was around 7.1 per cent, 11.42 per cent in the second, which further rose to 26.59 per cent in the third phase. Agarwal has said that the rising recovery rate is “satisfactory”.

In other news, a notice was issued by the Chinese embassy in New Delhi which states that China is planning to evacuate its stranded citizens from India. While the number of Chinese citizens currently residing in India is unclear, Beijing has asked them to register themselves by May 27. The notice also says that those returning to China will have to pay for their return tickets and 14-day stay at quarantine facilities once they land home. While also forbidding those having symptoms of the COVID-19 or have been diagnosed with from returning to China.

The current active coronavirus cases worldwide are 2,874,939 and 348,318 deaths while 2,386,321 have recovered and have been discharged worldwide. The worst 10 countries affected are:

  • Brazil-376,669 cases, 23,522 deaths and 153,833 recoveries. 
  • Russia-362,342 cases, 3,807 deaths and 131,129 recoveries. 
  • Spain-262,480 cases, 26,837 deaths and 196,958 recoveries. 
  • UK-261,184 cases, 36,914 deaths and recoveries tally N/A
  • Italy-230,158 cases, 32,877 deaths and 141,981 recoveries. 
  • France-182,942 cases, 28,432 deaths and 65,199 recoveries. 
  • Germany-180,808 cases, 8,432 deaths and 162,000 recoveries. 
  • Turkey-157,814 cases, 8,369 deaths and 120 ,015 recoveries. 
  • India-146,371 cases, 4,187 deaths and 61,151 recoveries.
