GI Tag registration approved for Sikkim’s Dallay Khorsani

Gangtok, September 2: In 2019, there was speculation of Sikkim’s famous Temi Tea to obtain a Geographical Indication Tag (GI Tag) but that has yet to become a reality, but the good news is that another popular food produce from Sikkim, the dallay khorsani or red cherry pepper, has been approved for GI Tag registration.

A GI tag is a sign used to indictae a specifici region’s physical goods, under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act of 1999 (enforced in 2003).

The dallay khorsani, is a sub-species of the Capsicum, specifically to the Capsicum annuum family. It is widely grown in Sikkim and North Bengal and is considered one of the hottest chilli peppers, with a Scoville rating of 100,000 to 350,000 SHU (for comparison Naga King chilli has Scoville
rating of 330,000-1,000,000 SHU, Tabasco red pepper sauces has rating
of 2500-5000 SHU and pure capsaicin has Scoville rating of 16,000,000
SHU).

Previously, Sikkim’s sole GI Tag product was the large cardamom, approved on March 2015.

A GI tag is not only for identifying unique products of states, but is closely tied to the economic growth and progress of the state. It also helps to filter out fake products, which is a punishable offence under the law it is enforced under.
