Former Brazilian Football Star Ronaldinho Gaucho Fighting for his freedom after being arrested in Paraguay.

Brazilian footballing star Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, better known as Ronaldinho Gaucho along with his brother Roberto Assis has been sentenced to prison after trying to enter Paraguay using a dodgy passport.

Brazilian former soccer star Ronaldinho was under investigation that started on March 5th after Paraguayan authorities claimed he and his brother entered the country using fake passports.

Prosecutors and Paraguay’s national police carried out a search operation of the sports star’s suite at the Yacht Resort Hotel and Golf Club on March 4th in Lambaré, which is near the Paraguayan capital city of Asunción, prosecutors said in a statement published on Facebook.

Ronaldinho’s lawyer Sérgio Queiroz told Brazilian media GloboEsporte.com on the 4th that “certainly… this is an error that will be cleared up.”

“Ronaldinho and his brother entered the country at 9.05 a.m. on a commercial flight which landed at Silvio Petirossi International Airport. They entered using a Paraguayan passport which was authentic but contained false information,” public prosecutor Federico Delfino said in a Facebook post.

“We now know that the numbers of these passports belong to other people. They are real passports but with fake details. They were issued in January 2020, and the ID cards, which were given to them when they arrived, in December,” the prosecutor added.

Ronaldinho and his brother Roberto Assis, were arrested on March 6th for using a false Paraguayan passport, are to present their case to a judge on10th March. Their lawyer Sergio Queiroz told Reuters, a global news agency, that they had asked a court to release them into house arrest and offered guarantees they were not a flight risk.

His lawyer has labelled Ronaldinho “stupid” after being arrested for using a fake passport to enter Paraguay.

Adolfo Marin claimed the ex-Barcelona and AC Milan legend was unaware the documents were falsified, as a potential six-month prison stay looms.

The lawyer for the 39-year-old told Brazilian newspaper Folha de Sao Paulo: “The courts have not taken into account the fact that Ronaldinho didn’t know he was committing a crime, because he didn’t understand he had been given false documents. He is stupid.”

Former Brazil and Barcelona player Ronaldinho Gaucho is adapting quickly to life in a Paraguayan jail, the head of the facility told Reuters on Monday, but his lawyers are hopeful he may soon be released into house arrest while the investigation continues.

“In broad terms he is doing very well,” prison warden Blas Vera told Reuters in a telephone interview. “I see he is in good spirits, just like you see him on television, always smiling.”

The more dangerous prisoners are housed in a different wing to Ronaldinho, Vera said, adding that he was working to ensure the pair’s stay is “as comfortable as possible”.

Till the 10th, when the pair are to present their case in front of a judge, it is obscure what the case might bring for the brothers but sources say that Ronaldinho is in good spirits and optimistic in prison for the time being.
