COVID-19 untouched Sikkim strives to remain at zero

Sikkim is a state which deserves a special mention today. All over the world, where COVID-19 is travelling and impacting people as fast as it can, Sikkim remains magically untouched. Yes! Magic and the government and local people are magicians. The brave decision of the government of Sikkim plays an important role in the prevention of COVID-19 in the state — the decision of sealing the borders and early checking of the temperature of people who entered the state marks a crucial step.

Sikkim has already crossed the first step with zero cases of COVID-19 till now, but it doesn’t mean we have won over the virus. We still need to keep the count at zero. Once the central government declared the lockdown, Sikkim’s public obediently followed it. However, several instances of people hiding their travel history surfaced, but the district authorities took swift action in apprehending such individuals and put them under compulsory government quarantine for two weeks. And this has worked wonders.

State’s health Director-General cum Secretary, Dr Pempa Tshering Bhutia has set up a devoted surveillance team in every village, taking aid of other government departments to track down any individual who could be hiding their travel history. The CM gave an advisory on 2 March about the sealing of international borders and from 5 March, Sikkim banned international tourists from visiting the state while 17 March onwards, they banned domestic tourists as well.

What made Sikkim stand out in this difficult situation? I have already mentioned the great job done by the government of Sikkim, but we definitely can’t forget about the obedient citizens of the state.

All religious places were locked down without any complaints. You can see police all over the place and a few announcements regarding the virus. Also, the free distribution of the hand sanitizers, ration and masks are playing an important role. Nonstop work of the government employees deserves a great compliment as well. The only vehicles you can see on the roads are government or army vehicles. The obedience in following the rule by the local public plays a crucial role.

This small state of India is standing tall in the world and deserves a special mention in every news channel. Nevertheless, this is just half of the movie, and while Sikkim tries to survive until the end, let’s hope for the best.
